Colombia's Leader Declares 'I Will Resort to Weapons Again' should American Forces Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump and Colombia's president have intensified the tone of their war of words, further raising strains bilaterally following American military units struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates drug factories and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Rising Rhetoric and Claims

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the American leader hinted at comparable use of force towards the South American nation, asserting Colombia faces serious problems and governed by an unwell individual who likes making the drug and distributing it to America."

Although Colombia remains the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way involved in the illicit industry.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation was historically a key ally of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and received wide political approval from American politicians, yet ties have soured dramatically after Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s drug trade is predominantly run by criminal organizations including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Defiant Response

In response to a query whether military intervention comparable to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks without information. Stop slandering me," he posted in a message.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will turn into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And if they detain me, whom a large part of Colombians loves and respects, they will release the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

The president dedicated some years as a young man participating with the radical M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed he did not took part in armed clashes. Upon leaving the group, he participated in drafting a new constitution over three decades ago and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of the capital city before being elected president.

"I pledged to abstain from using a gun ... but in defense of my country I will take up weapons once more," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Widespread Rejection

The Colombian defence minister reported that the national leader's protection team had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, but voices from across Colombian politics have denounced the threats of American military action against their nation.

Political and Economic Sanctions

American authorities revoked Petro’s visa following he encouraged US military personnel to disobey unlawful commands. Later, in October, the US enacted financial sanctions targeting Petro, his spouse and various associates.

At the same time the US was building up its troop levels in the Caribbean and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations on maritime targets in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
